NEW ORLEANS - Quite a night for Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints — a record and a rout. BenJarvus Green-Ellis Super Bowl Jersey. Brees set the NFL mark for yards passing in a season, breaking a record that Dan Marino had held for nearly three decades, and New Orleans clinched the NFC South title with a 45-16 victory over the Falcons on Monday night. Brees threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns, the last a 9-yard strike to Darren Sproles that set the record with 2:51 to go. "Honestly, I was really trying not to think about the record or anything," Brees said. "I knew we were close. A couple guys mentioned stuff to me on the sideline. I didnt want to hear it. Its like a pitcher with a no-hitter, I guess." It was Brees final pass of the game and it gave him 5,087 yards passing — with one game still to play. Marino finished with 5,084 yards for the Miami Dolphins in 1984. Minutes after Brees broke the record, Marino offered congratulations on his Twitter account. "Great job by such a special player," Marino wrote. As Sproles spiked the ball, Brees thrust his fist triumphantly in the air and started walking toward midfield while the Superdome crowd went wild and his teammates chased him down. Offensive guard Carl Nicks was the first one to get there and tried to lift Brees onto his shoulder, but couldnt do it as teammates swarmed around. "If I could have put him on my shoulders and paraded him around the whole stadium I would have done that. He deserves it," Nicks said. "Its like a movie, man. Just a movie ending. Its beautiful. ... You could tell by everyones reaction after he did it how much people care about that guy. We all love him." Brees four touchdown passes gave him 276 for his career, moving him ahead of Joe Montana (273) and Vinny Testaverde (275) for ninth all-time. He is the first quarterback in NFL history to pass for more than 5,000 yards twice — he had 5,069 in 2008. Brees first scoring pass went for 8 yards to Marques Colston and the second for 9 yards to Jimmy Graham. Grahams TD catch was his 10th of the season, a new franchise high for a tight end. In the third quarter, Brees hit Robert Meachem for a score from 24 yards, which made it 28-10. "I love the fact that everybody could be part of this on Monday Night Football," Brees said. "Theres so many people that are a part of this. Its not about me. Its about this team, its about this city, its about these fans. So many people contributed to this, and Im happy for them." The Saints (12-3) also had 463 total yards, giving them more than 6,857 offensive yards for the season, breaking the 2008 club record of 6,571. New Orleans continues to close in on the NFL record of 7,075 offensive yards in a season set by the 2000 St. Louis Rams. Brees might have broken the record in the third quarter if not for Sproles 92-yard kickoff return, which set up John Kasays 29-yard field goal. Brees also was intercepted twice, once in the Falcons end zone, but New Orleans was still dominant enough to take a three-score lead. The game became a romp when Julio Jones was stripped by Scott Shanle and Malcolm Jenkins returned it 30 yards for a score to make it 38-16 in the fourth quarter. The Superdome crowd was in full celebration by then, but the play also meant fans would have to wait until later in the fourth quarter before Brees finally got his chance to break the passing record. "Obviously, its a special moment for the players, especially Drew," Saints coach Sean Payton said. "I couldnt be more proud of him." The Saints can earn the No. 2 seed and a first-round playoff bye with a win Sunday over Carolina and a San Francisco loss at St. Louis, which is 2-13. Atlanta, which won the NFC South last season, is headed to the playoffs as a wild card. Uncharacteristically, Brees had only a yard passing during a span of a little more than 18 minutes. Knowing he was closing in the record, the crowd howled, "Drewwww" each time he took the field. He finally gave the fans what they wanted after Atlanta failed on a fourth-down try at its own 33. That gave Brees, who needed only 30 yards for the record at that point, just enough space to work with. "I knew after the touchdown to Meachem that we were really close," Brees said. "I didnt know how close, but really close, and then we had a couple of those drives that stalled out and I thought, Youve got to be kidding me — especially since the whole game we had been converting first downs, doing all the right things offensively, both the run and the pass, yet we couldnt put a drive together in the fourth quarter and I thought, weve got to get this ball back, weve got to go down and score and put one together." Matt Ryan had 373 yards passing and one TD, including a 21-yard scoring strike to Jones that gave the Falcons (9-6) a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter. "We didnt really play well enough in any phase of the game to give ourselves a chance to win," said Falcons coach Mike Smith, whose team came in with a chance to stay in the hunt for the division title. "There were some opportunities early on, and then it kind of got out of hand there at the end. ... Its not the type of effort that you want to have with so much on the line with what the outcome could have meant to our team." New Orleans responded to Atlantas first TD with a 10-play, 81-yard scoring drive that put the Saints in the lead for good. Brees completed four of six passes for 48 yards, the last three to Colston, who finished with seven catches for 81 yards. The result might have been even more lopsided if Brees pass intended for Graham in the end zone had not been broken up by linebacker Curtis Lofton, and then batted in the air by safety William Moore before coming to rest in the arms of Dominique Franks for an interception. New Orleans bounced back on its final drive of the second quarter, covering 80 yards in 10 plays and only 1:55, capped by Grahams TD catch. Both teams scored on all their possessions in the opening quarter, with the Saints briefly pulling in front 7-3 on Pierre Thomas 4-yard touchdown run, after which he pulled a bow from his uniform pants, put it on the football and offered it as a gift to a woman with a parasol in the front row behind the end zone. The referees werent cutting Thomas any slack on his Christmas-themed celebration, flagging him for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The score capped an eight-play, 84-yard scoring drive on which Brees completed two passes for 49 yards. Notes: Brees has passed for 300 yards or more an NFL-record 12 times this season. ... New England quarterback Tom Brady could also pass Marino next week — and maybe even Brees, too. Brady has thrown for 4,897 yards this season. ... The Saints are 7-0 at home and never have gone undefeated at home in a full season. ... The Falcons were 0-3 on attempted fourth-down conversions. Eli Manning Youth Jersey. Head will have 24 seconds to shoot 20 pucks into an open net from the far blue line. If he scores 15 or more goals within the allotted time, he will win $1 million in a one-time payout. Earlier this month, Head honed his wrist shot in a special one-hour practice session with Hall of Fame defenceman Bobby Orr at General Motors Place. In his four attempts from the far blue line, Head scored 14, 16, 13 and 9 goals. His second attempt of 16 goals was one more than needed to take home the $1 million. Head will also have the chance to win up to four new Chevrolet Malibu Hybrids for himself, his two friends, Lance Badger and Randy Bout, and one fan in attendance at the game. Head, Badger and Bout will shoot pucks from centre ice, where they will each have 15 seconds to shoot 10 pucks at an open net (30 pucks in total). Radwanska needed just over an hour-and-a-half to dismiss a sloppy Bartoli, who piled up seven double faults and had her serve broken four times. The AFC East has the potential to have three playoff teams. The Patriots, Jets and Dolphins all could be anywhere from first to third. Within the division, the popular pick is the Jets. What they were able to accomplish last year under Rex Ryan was remarkable yet logical, in that they finished first in total defence, eighth in run defence, first in pass defence and - most importantly - first in scoring defense. They did it all without a very good defensive tackle, nose tackle Kris Tonkas. They have added cornerback depth, and also depth at running back with LaDainian Tomlinson. Its also Mark Sanchezs second year. I think New England will win the dividion because the egos in New England are under control, and I dont know if that is the case with the Jets. I have a gut feeling that the Patriots will have a good year because more than ever befoore, they do not look to the past for present success. Kenny Phillips Jersey I have a feeling that this team has a new focus and a new hunger. Their two games against the Jets are critical. Miami is like the Giants, Bears and Seahawks: they could finish first or third, depending on a few critical plays. The combination of a maturing Brandon Marshall, a proven Ronnie Brown and a tough Chad Henne would make them very tough to beat. Either Miami, New York or New England could win the division, but not the Bills. Buffalo will have real concerns at quarterback, offensive tackle, in the pass rush, on special teams, and at receiver. The Bills will be strong at running back, linebacker, and throughout the secondary, but the division is far too strong to think the Bills could make a realistic run at the AFC East title. It may be the toughest division in the AFC. ' ' '

WASHINGTON -- Albert Haynesworth said Saturday his US$100 million contract doesnt make him a slave to the Washington Redskins. Brandon Jacobs Jersey. In an interview with 106.7 The Fan, the two-time All-Pro defensive tackle said the big paycheques dont mean he cant push back when the team asks him to play a different position. Haynesworth, who rarely speaks to the media, was upset this year when the Redskins switched to a 3-4 defence and told him he would be playing nose tackle. Haynesworth protested by staying away from the teams off-season conditioning program and practices. He also skipped a mandatory minicamp and was unable to pass the teams conditioning test until the 10th day of training camp -- all despite receiving a $21 million bonus on April 1. "I guess in this world we dont have a lot of people with, like, backbones," Haynesworth said. "Just because somebody pay you money dont mean theyll make you do whatever they want or whatever. I mean, does that mean everything is for sale? "I mean, Im not for sale. Yeah, I signed the contract and got paid a lot of money, but ... that dont mean Im for sale or a slave or whatever." Haynesworth said it was agreed that he would play defensive tackle in a 4-3 system when he signed with the Redskins in 2009, but the team has since overhauled its front office, coaching staff and offensive and defensive schemes. He said he now likes the new scheme better as he works with defensive co-ordinator Jim Haslett. Haynesworth made a passing reference to his disputes with coach Mike Shanahan, saying some things "went down with me and Mike," but he did not elaborate. He also said he doesnt like the spotlight and would rather be someone who can just "go to Wal-Mart and hang out." Haynesworth implied he would be playing in Sundays game against the St. Louis Rams. He added one assist in seven playoff games as the Penguins claimed the Stanley Cup. Sykora has reached five Stanley Cup finals, including two titles. Sykora was the Penguins fourth-leading scorer in 2007-08, recording 63 points (28-35=63) in 81 regular season games and nine points (6-3=9) in 20 playoff games as the Penguins advanced to the Stanley Cup finals. The 6-foot, 190-pound native of Plzen, Czech Republic, has 674 points (300-374=674) in 921 regular season NHL games, and 69 points (32-37=69) in 115 playoff games. Sykora was New Jerseys first-round pick (No. 15 overall) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. He represented the Czech Republic at the 2004 Olympics, and played for the Czech Republic in three World Championships (1998, 1999, 2005), two World Cups (1997 and 2005), and two World Junior Championships (1994, 1995). Defenceman Erik Karlsson led all vote-getters in fan balloting, and captain Daniel Alfredsson and fellow forwards Milan Michalek and Jason Spezza also were elected for the game on Jan. 29. The NHL said Thursday they will be joined by Toronto defenceman Dion Phaneuf and Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas in this years game. The four Senators hold the top four spots on the clubs scoring list, with Spezza leading the way with 40 points -- three more than Karlsson. However, Karlsson topped everyone in the league with 939,951 votes, 42,536 more than Alfredsson. Michalek got his spot with a late rush, beating out Torontos Phil Kessel by 42,144 votes. Kessel had been in line to be voted in during the election period. "Its great, obviously, to see all four of us getting in," Alfredsson said. "You look at Jason, Erik, and Milan, too, theyve had great starts to the season. If we would have had to choose one player, it would have been tough because theyve all played great to start the season. To be able to all get in when it is in Ottawa, its going to be a special occasion for all of us and something well cherish forever, Im sure." About 24 million votes were cast by fans from Nov. 14 until Jan. 4 in the all-digital balloting, a 66-per cent increase over last season. It is the third-highest total since voting went to an exclusive digital format in 2007. Missing from the initial list of stars are Tampa Bays Steven Stamkos, who leads the NHL with 27 goals, along with Rangers forward Marian Gaborik, Kessel, Jonathan Toews of Chicago, and Pittsburghs James Neal -- the next four top goal scorers ahead of Michalek. "I didnt think I had a shot," Michalek said. "I was really surprised when I looked up this morning and my name was there. The fans did a great job." None of the NHLs top 10 point scorers this season were votted into the game by fans. Chad Ochocinco Jersey Spezza is tied for 11th in scoring with 40 points. The remaining 36 all-stars will be chosen later this month, and the two team rosters will be determined for a second straight year by the fantasy draft during all-star weekend. Each team will have 12 forwards, six defencemen and three goalies. Phaneuf will join the 21-year-old Karlsson on defence after garnering 614,933 votes. The Senators nearly got a fifth player elected, but Phaneuf with 614,933 votes edged Ottawa defenceman Sergei Gonchar by 11,305 for the final spot on the blue-line. Thomas, the reigning Vezina Trophy winner from the defending Stanley Cup champions, easily won the goalie race with 626,540 votes -- 128,000 more than Torontos James Reimer. Thomas set the NHL record for save percentage last season with a mark of .938, and is having another impressive season for the Bruins, who started Thursday one point behind the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers. Thomas is 17-6 with a 1.90 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage -- even better than his record-setting mark of last season. He is 14-2 in his past 16 decisions. Michalek, who recently returned following a five-game absence because of a concussion, has scored 19 goals in 35 games. He has already exceeded his total of 18 from last season and is three away from matching his career-best of 22, set in the 2009-10 season. Alfredsson is third on the Senators scoring list with 28 points, two more than Michalek, in his 16th NHL season -- all with Ottawa. He led forwards with 897,055 votes, followed by Spezza with 817,483, and Michalek with 743,977. "It means a lot," said Alfredsson, now a six-time all-star. "You dont always look for acknowledgment, but at this stage of my career I think you reflect a little bit more maybe than you did a few years back, so getting this chance to be part of these festivities, showcase the game in front of a crowd like we have is something I look forward to and something Im going to cherish." MIAMI -- Denver Broncos offensive co-ordinator Mike McCoy has joined the list of candidates for the Miami Dolphins head coaching job. Super Bowl Jersey. McCoy completed an interview Monday, the Dolphins said. Hes the first candidate to meet with the Dolphins since they were turned down Friday by former Titans coach Jeff Fisher, who chose instead to become coach of the St. Louis Rams. Under McCoy this season, Denvers offence ranked only 23rd in yards and 26th in points. But McCoy won praise for adapting the offence at midseason when second-year pro Tim Tebow became the starting quarterback, and the Broncos made an improbable run to the second round of the playoffs before losing Saturday at New England. The Oakland Raiders have also received permission from Denver to interview McCoy. The former quarterback was on the Carolina Panthers staff from 2000 to 2008, then joined the Broncos in 2009. The interview was the first in nearly a week for the Dolphins, who waited several days for a decision by Fisher. Other candidates interviewed by Miami have included Cincinnati Bengals defensive co-ordinator Mike Zimmer, Green Bay Packers offensive co-ordinator Joe Philbin, Chicago Bears special teams co-ordinator Dave Toub, and Todd Bowles, who was the Dolphins interim coach for their final three games this season. After being rejected by Fisher, Miami owner Stephen Ross said the team planned to interview several more candidates. The Dolphins fired Tony Sparano last month with three games to go in his fourth season as coach, and they finished 6-10 to miss the playoffs for the ninth time in 10 years. Giants Jersey. BALI, Indonesia: Developing countries face health problem caused by electronic waste (e-waste) dumped by rich ones, a UN official said here on Monday. Developing countries will also face rising environmental damage and health problems if e-waste recycling is left to vagaries of informal sector, Achim Steiner, the United Nations Under Secretary and the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program told a press conference in Nusa Dua of Indonesias Bali province. He added that boosting developing country e-waste recycling rates can have the potential to generate decent employment, cut greenhouse gas emission and recover a wide range of valuable metals, including silver, gold, palladium, copper and indium. By acting now and planning forward, many countries can turn an e-challenge into an e-opportunity, said Steiner. Steiner said that the aim of the report titled Recycling ?from E-Waste to Resources was not to prevent people to buy electronic equipment any more. Related readings: China says communication with developing countries sufficient Ban urges lawmakers to work with UN to pull developing countries out of recession I see growing role for developing counntries Thats not our goal. Ahmad Bradshaw Jersey We just want to say that this report gives new urgency to establishing ambitious, formal and regulated processes for collecting and managing e-waste via setting up of large, efficient facilities, said Steiner. The report cites a variety of sources to illustrate the e-waste problem, adding that global e-waste generation is growing by about 40 million tons a year. It also said that manufacturing mobile phone and personal computers consume three percent of the gold and silver mined worldwide each year, 13 percent of palladium and 15 percent of cobalt. Meanwhile, it said modern electronics contain up to 60 different element, many valuable, some hazardous and some both. The report also said that carbon dioxide emissions from mining and production of copper and precious and rare metals used in electrical and electronic equipment are estimated at over 23 million tons. Given the infrastructure expense and technology skills required to create proper facilities for efficient and environmentally sound metal recovery, the report suggests facilitating export of critical e-scrap fractions like circuit boards or batteries from smaller countries to OECD-level, certified end-processors. Djokovic looms in the semis if he can get past a tough quarter that includes former Australian Open champions Marat Safin and Thomas Johansson, both unseeded, and former finalists Marcos Baghdatis (2006) and Lleyton Hewitt (2005). Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., will face Finlands Jarkko Nieminen, seeded 24th, in the first round. David Nalbandian, who beat both Federer and Nadal in the same tournament twice in October en route to titles in Madrid and Paris, is in Djokovics quarter along with David Ferrer of Spain and former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero. Three-time French Open winner Rafael Nadal, the only player to beat Federer in the last 10 Grand Slam events, will have to get past fellow Spaniard Carlos Moya en route to a potential quarter-final match against former U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick. If he makes the semifinals, second-ranked Nadal could face the likes of No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko, No. 8 Richard Gasquet or No. 9 Andy Murray, who has a difficult opening match against young Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. On the womens side, No. 1 Justine Henin wont face a Top 10 player until a potential quarter-final match against No. 5 Maria Sharapova, who lost last years final to Serena Williams. Sharapova has a difficult second-round match against former No. 1 Lindsay Davenport, who was unseeded despite winning three titles since her comeback following the birth of son Jagger, her first child, last June. Williams has a relatively easy path to the quarter-finals with wild-card entry Jarmila Gajdosova in the first round and the prospect of two qualifiers after that. No. 3 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia or 2006 Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo figure to be her likely quarter-final rivals. On the other half, No. 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova cannot meet a Top 10 player until a quarter-final against fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze, who is seeded sixth. BEIJING - China on Wednesday lashed out at a Pentagon report on Beijings defense capabilities, saying it is no good for the recovery of severed military ties. Issuing this report is not beneficial for the improvement and development of China-US military ties, Senior Colonel Geng Yansheng, spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense, said in a statement faxed to China Daily. Related readings: Pentagon report on PLA unprofessional Pentagon publishes report on Chinas military Pentagon report on China a dud, says expert US aircraft carrier to participate in war games with ROK: Pentagon Pentagon may delay paper on Chinas military might The report, issued on Monday after a five-month delay, used a whole chapter to blame the current impasse in China-US military contacts on Beijing. Military contacts were frozen in January after Washington tried to push for a $6.4-billion arms deal with Taiwan. In June, China rejected a proposed visit by the United States defense secretary, which shocked the Pentagon. Experts said the rejection was a result of Washingtons insistence on selling weapons to Taiwan. Its irresponsible for the US to blame the cut contacts on China, said Senior Colonel Wen Bing, a researcher at the Academy of Military Sciences. The Pentagon report also said the balance of forces across the Taiwan Straits was continuing to shift in Beijings favor and that Beijing is reaching out from its traditional realm. It said the Chinese military was developing in a number of areas including nuclear weapons, long-range missiles, submarines, aircraft carriers and cyber warfare, though it admitted to a lack of proof on some accusations. Taiwan reacted on Tuesday by renewing its call for the US to sell it advanced weapons, while Japan vowed to keep paying attention to Chinas military trend. China ... firmly abides by a defensive national defense policy, does not take part in military confrontation and does not pose a military threat to any country, Geng said in the statement. Wes Welker Super Bowl Jersey We ask the United States ... to refrain from comments and behavior that are not beneficial for mutual trust between the two militaries and Sino-US relations, he said, urging Washington to stop issuing such reports. Peng Guangqian, a Beijing-based military analyst, said the annual report itself is the product of a Cold War mentality. It is impossible to be objective when the US is defining China as being on the opposite side. Recent US moves showing off its military power in Chinas backyard also reflect Cold War thinking, he said. The reports release comes amid deep dissatisfaction in Beijing over joint naval drills between the US and the Republic of Korea in the Yellow Sea. China was also upset by statements last month by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, which were seen as unwelcome interference in territorial disputes between China and Southeast Asia nations over the South China Sea. Also Wednesday, the head of the US military Pacific Command said the US would work to ensure security and protect important trade routes in the South China Sea. The US military has been present in the region for 150 years and would remain there for many more, Admiral Robert Willard told reporters after meeting the head of the Philippine military. We discussed the assertiveness that were experiencing by the Chinese in the South China Sea and the concerns that has generated within the region, he said. But only a few days ago Philippine Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo told Washington to keep out of the regional issue. Its ASEAN and China. Can I make myself clear? Its ASEAN and China. Is that clear enough? he told reporters. Given the current situation, it is pirates logic for the US to ask China to cease advancing, Peng said, using a Chinese phrase referring to pirates who steal from others, but ask them not to fight back. China welcomes the US as a friend, but the US has to behave as a real friend first. AFP contributed to the story. ' ' '

BEIJING - The latest World Health Organization (WHO) assessment shows China is complying with international standards for vaccine regulation, a WHO official announced here Tuesday. Chinas national regulatory authorities, represented by the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), in the area of vaccines were recognized by WHO as functional, Lahouari Belgharbi, a scientist of the WHO Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals, told a conference in Beijing. Belgharbi headed a WHO group to conduct the latest assessment in December last year, examining the performance of SFDA with regard to vaccine regulation. He specifically looked at the SFDAs overall regulatory framework, marketing authorization and licensing, post-marketing surveillance, and especially the adverse reactions to immunization. The WHO experts visited institutes involved in vaccine regulation in Beijing, Shanghai and provinces of Hebei and Jiangsu. China is the 36th vaccine producing country that has had its regulatory system assessed as qualified by the WHO, he said. It is a validationn of the capability of the Chinese regulatory authority. Aaron Hernandez Jersey.. said WHO China Representative Dr Michael OLeary. With a regulatory system for vaccines documented to comply with international standards, vaccine manufacturers in China are now eligible to apply to WHO for prequalification of vaccines, OLeary told the conference. China produces a large number of vaccines at affordable prices, and could make a significant contribution to meeting the worlds vaccine needs, said OLeary. This could eventually open the door for vaccines produced in China to be supplied through United Nations agencies to developing countries, according to the statement on the WHO website. It is expected that vaccines from China could be prequalified 1-2 years from now, said the WHO statement. Currently, China has 36 vaccine producing plants to produce 49 kinds of vaccines against 27 diseases, with annual capacity of nearly 1 billion doses, according to SFDA statistics. China failed to pass the WHO vaccine regulatory system assessment in 1999, 2001 and 2005. Getting WHO approvement this time proves our improved vaccine regulation efforts and guaranteed vaccine quality, said Shao Mingli, head of the SFDA. A new Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) code adopted by the SFDA took effect Tuesday. In line with international standards, the new code puts in place stricter requirements for vaccine production to ensure production of vaccines of assured quality. ' ' '

"Weve got tough calls at every position and Jan 1 is going to be a bittersweet day for our players. Authentic BenJarvus Green-Ellis Jersey. Or, more specifically, to have all 23 players headed to Vancouver for Team USA at the 2010 Winter Olympics named by Dec. 16 when his managerial staff congregates one final time at the NHL Board of Governors meetings in Pebble Beach, Calif. "Weve been rating all the American players," Team USAs general manager said during a USA Hockey conference call . "Our last meeting was in Toronto at the NHL General Managers meetings (Nov. 11-12) and well meet again Pebble Beach (Dec. 15-16). At that point, we hope to be down to 2-3 decisions as far as our roster -- if any at all. "The ideal world is, after meeting in Pebble Beach, weve got our team picked and then well go to Fenway Park (on Jan. 1 for the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic) to announce it." And what if the final roster isnt established by Dec. 16? "If we have a last-minute decision, well chase the players and scout the players," Burke said. "Weve all kept time open in our schedules to do that." 2010 OLYMPICS (Vancouver, 2/16 - 2/28) Stamkos bulls way into Olympic talk Mike G. Wilson was coach of the U.S. national team that won the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Hes excited to be working the bench with assistants John Tortorella and Scott Gordon in the 2010 Olympics. "Were all on the same page with regard to the type of team that wed like to be," Wilson said. "We want to play a fast, aggressive, forechecking style that tries to get the puck and control the puck all the time. Our three styles kind of mesh if you watch our teams play in the NHL. The Rangers, Islanders and Maple Leafs are known for their aggressive, fore-checking styles and, we hope, in the few days we have with the team before the games, were able to solidify that style of play and execute it on the ice." While Burke refused to offer any insight into players already penciled in on the roster, he did offer a few subtle hints. "Weve put some exciting young players in the League the last 3-4 years --- the Kessels and Kanes of the world," Burke said. "Weve got some grizzled veterans who have participated and competed -- the Tkachuks, Modanos and Guerins. We have to figure out what the balance is. Were not closing the door on that (older) generation, but were not promising anything either. If its time to turn the page, were prepared to do that." Wilson admitted that getting systems in order and in check are imperative in the early stages of the Olympic tournament. "If you can do that in a short period of time, you have a chance," Wilson said. "Any of the coaches in this tournament would say the most important thing is that your goalie is playing well right off the bat -- that could solve any problems you have in other areas of your game." Wilson was then asked how impressed hes been with Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller. "Ive been very impressed with Ryan," Wilson said. Wilson, who also lauded forward Ryan Kesler when inquired about the Vancouver forward, is the head coach for the Maple Leafs and Burke is the teams general manager. Wilson said he plans on handing out a video playbook to get everyone up to speed on the game plan entering Vancouver. "Its going to be difficult considering well probably have just one practice before we begin play, but my job is to communicate the best I can with every player what were going to try," Wilson said. The denial by sources from the Ministry of Agriculture of its approval of importing and planting genetically modified (GM) crop seeds should serve to dispel consumers anxiety that they would be unaware if they were eating GM foods. But we get the message from what has been said about the future of GM technology. Advocates have said that GM crops will one day support sustainable agriculture development. If we have to face the prospect that GM foods will be included in what we eat in the future, enough work must be done to make sure that the GM seeds to be planted will pose no threat to our health. Rob Gronkowski Super Bowl Jersey True, GM crops are resilient to pests. Some are drought-proof, some may contain a particular kind of vitamin or other nutrients that people need. Yet, we still dont know whether GM crops and foods have any downsides to them. AVON, Ohio -- Sitting on the gym stage, Indians manager Eric Wedge looked across at the bleachers packed with screaming elementary school kids and observed the future. Ahmad Bradshaw Jersey. Hes not so sure about his own. With two weeks left in Clevelands disastrous season, Wedge does not yet know if hell be back for an eighth season and the final year of his contract. That decision rests with Indians owners Larry and Paul Dolan, who along with general manager Mark Shapiro, are expected to determine the fate of Wedge and his staff shortly after the Oct. 4 season finale in Boston, where coincidentally Wedge played briefly for the Red Sox. Wedge, of course, would like to return. "Ive always been a big believer in trying to finish what you start," the 41-year-old Wedge said Monday. "But I also understand the situation were in, the business end of where we are and the realities of where we are. Thats not for me to decide. Ive been here for a long time and Im very vested in this organization, so you always want to see it through. "Well see what happens." The Indians are staggering to the finish. They entered the week on a season-high eight-game losing streak and are 3-16 in September. Its not the conclusion Wedge had hoped for, and not the kind of last-lap kick his teams have mustered in previous seasons, but hes not worrying about what he cant control. Wedge is at peace. "This has been difficult, but its harder for everybody outside of baseball thats around me," he said. "Its part of it. I understand that." Wedge isnt sitting around waiting for the end. On Monday, he took part in an assembly to reward the children at Avon Heritage Elementary for their academic achievement. Wedge was joined by Indians players Chris Gimenez and Trevor Crowe as well as the Indians furry mascot, Slider. Just back from a brutal 0-7 road trip to Minnesota and Oakland, and with his job in jeopardy, Wedge could have been home with his family. Instead, he kept his commitment. Wedge and his wife, Kate, are active in Clevelands community. This is home, where his two children were born and where he has tried to keep the Indians competitive while contending with the mid-market constraints that are threatening to crumble baseballs infrastructure. The Indians came into 2009 expected to do more than contend in the AL. Some experts even picked them to make the World Series. But an atrocious start was followed by key injuries, and Cleveland was out of the race by early June. The sudden slide led to ownerships decision to trade some of the clubs top assets, including third baseman Mark DeRosa, first baseman Ryan Garko, pitcher Carl Pavano, reigning Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee and all-star catcher Victor Martinez. Those deals came one year after Cleveland was forced to ship ace CC Sabathia to Milwaukee for prospects before he could leave after the season as a free agent. Once this season was surrendered, Wedge, the ALs manager of the year in 2007, was charged with two goals: win and develop younger players. Its not easy to do both, but its not new to Wedge, whose tenure in Cleveland since 2003 has included two massive rebuilding projects. This season has been especially challenging. "We felt if we could get healthy, stay healthy and the guys we were counting on in the bullpen to step up into their roles, then we would have a pretty good shot at it, but none of that happened," Wedge said. "And then there were the trades we made and I understand they were out of necessity, but thats tough. But I understand it." The feeling was that if the Indians ended the year with a flourish, Wedges job would be saved. Now, it appears the team may have no choice but to go in a new direction. Closer Kerry Wood, who signed a two-year, US$20 million free agent contract with Cleveland in December, said the players should be the ones held accountable for the Indians plunge. "Its not the coaching staff," Wood said. "They do what they can for us to be better. They suggested adjustments and we didnt make them. We have nobody to blame but ourselves for where we are. The organization has the right stuff in place. They pay attention to the small stuff that a mid-market team has to do, but the players just underachieved." In the days ahead, theres a possibility that the Dolans may ask Wedge to make dramatic changes to his coaching staff to keep his job. Its not known how Wedge, who has fired coaches in the past but is fiercely loyal to his staff, would react to such a proposal. It was just two years ago that Wedge was considered one of baseballs brightest managers. The Indians came within one win of a World Series trip in 2007, and with a core of young, talented players, it only seemed a matter of time before they won it all. But theyre rebuilding again, and soon, they may be doing it with a new manager. "I know that sometimes change has to be made for changes sake," Wedge said. "Youve got to be professional about it. Youve got to understand it and I do." Mario Manningham Super Bowl Jersey. BEIJING - Authorities in Central Chinas Hubei province have launched an inspection campaign to monitor rural nursing institutions after an elderly man with a mental illness died from abuse at a nursing home in Yingshan county, Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday. Police detained Ding Congjian, a staff member of Taohe Nursing Home, who allegedly tied up 68-year-old Chu Yingyun and hung him upside down overnight in subzero temperatures, causing his death on Nov 26, Beijing News reported. Ding caught Chu, who did not have children, throwing excrement from a chamber pot out the window on the evening of Nov 25. Following an argument, Ding allegedly hung Chu upside down overnight, during which time the temperature dropped below zero. Ding later said Chu had died from coronary heart disease. Chus nephew did not believee Ding and contacted police. Deion Branch Authentic Jersey Ding was arrested after an autopsy revealed frost and starvation led to Chus death, Beijing News reported. Nursing home resident Xiao Benqua, who witnessed Chus death, told Beijing News that residents dared not loosen the rope, as they all feared Ding, who had a bad temper and often beat them. The government-funded nursing home had only two caretakers for its 17 elderly residents, 10 of whom have physical or mental illnesses. Ding was left in charge after the director asked for maternity leave in September, the report said. The nursing home allegedly did roll call three times a day. And the elderly were not allowed to leave without the directors permission. A county civil affairs bureau official surnamed Shen told China Daily on Sunday that the tragedy was an accident, and the government has enhanced supervision over all local nursing homes to prevent it from happening again. Fang Jiake, deputy head of the Tianjin-based Hetong Senior Citizens Welfare Association, believed independent monitors are needed to watch over State-run nursing institutions. Shen said local nursing homes are shorthanded and do not have sufficient government funds to hire professionals or train caregivers. Fang suggested giving priority to the elderly who have physical and mental illnesses, given the limited resources for caring for the countrys graying population. ' ' '

On a day for finishing touches to the ballpark and the lineup, Washington beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-0 Saturday night in an exhibition game that also served as a dress rehearsal. Before the game, workers mowed the infield and outfield grass at Nationals Park, getting that curly "W" in center field just right. There were wires being tucked away, pillars near an entrance being painted blue and other last-minute fixes before a crowd of about 25,000 filed in for the Nationals first game in the place. And, in the distance beyond left field, there was the view of the Capitol Building dome, no adjustments necessary. "Its a new feel. It makes us a little bit more excited to come here every day, and it gives us a sense of pride," said Zimmerman, none too upset to leave behind creaky, leaky RFK Stadium. "Its going to be tough to beat us here." The Nationals have finished no higher than fourth place in three seasons since the franchise moved from Montreal to Washington. They play the first regular-season game at their US$600 million-plus new home on Sunday night, when they host the Atlanta Braves. Odalis Perez will pitch for Washington against Atlantas Tim Hudson (4-0 with a 0.60 ERA against the Nationals in 2007). "I dont have any doubts any more about the park," Washington president Stan Kasten said. "Its going to play just fine. Its going to service our customers just fine. I know were going to learn some things and have to improve some things and change some things in time, both for tomorrow and again in time for our first homestand. But we know, big-picture-wise, it turned out spectacular." The biggest picture is provided, of course, by the giant video board in right-center, measuring about 4,500 square feet (compared with less than 1,400 at RFK). Before playing in the new park, Washington set its opening-day lineup as manager Manny Acta discussed the last two up-for-grabs spots in his starting nine. The Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-4 in a Saturday night exhibition game in an unfamiliar ballpark: the strangely configured Los Angeles Coliseum. The Dodgers said 115,300 tickets had been sold, including some 25,000 for standing-room only, for the first big league baseball game at the facility since September 1961. The crowd was expected to break the existing world record for a baseball game of about 114,000 who attended an exhibition between the Australian national team and an American services team during the Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia, in 1956. The game was part of the Dodgers 50th anniversary celebration of their move west from Brooklyn. They played at the Coliseum for four years before making Dodger Stadium their permanent home in 1962. It was a stadium built for track and football, not baseball. Routine fly balls, even popups, soared over a 42-foot high screen in left field, where the distance from home plate to the foul pole was just 251 feet. Meanwhile, drives to right and center of over 400 feet were easy outs. The distance to the left-field foul pole for this game was 201 feet, and the screen was 60 feet high. But thats not what happened. Kevin Cash and Kevin Youkilis hit cheap homers off Esteban Loaiza to account for five runs in the first three innings, and the Dodgers managed just two runs until a two-run homer in the ninth by Blake DeWitt. At Memphis, Tenn., the New York Mets beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 in the second annual Civil Rights Game. I wanted to stay longer. It didnt seem like it was long enough," Mets utility man Damion Easley said. "I felt like a sponge. All the information I got, I wanted more." White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen called the experience "awesome," and wished the team had more time to appreciate the exhibits when they toured the museum Saturday morning. Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Roy Halladay threw seven strong innings in his return to Miami while Carlos Ruiz added four hits, as the Philadelphia Phillies topped the Florida Marlins, 6-1, in the opener of a three-game set. Tom Brady Womens Jersey. The last time Halladay (13-8) pitched in Miami, May 29, he threw the second perfect game in Phillies history. While he couldnt replicate that feat Tuesday, Halladay got the win with a dominating performance. In seven innings, the right-hander allowed one run -- on a homer by Dan Uggla -- and five total hits, walked one and struck out nine. "He just comes at you and throws strikes," said Marlins rookie outfielder Logan Morrison about Halladay. "He splits the plate with a two-seamer and a cutter. With those two pitches alone and the command that he has, its hard to tell whats coming next. You cant think hes gonna throw a two-seamer here or hes gonna throw a cutter here because if you guess wrong, hes gonna blow you up." The Phillies were coming off a series loss in Washington and on Tuesday lost another key player, as first baseman Ryan Howard landed on the disabled list with a moderate left ankle sprain. However, Philadelphia got production from the lower part of its lineup. In addition to Ruiz, who had a home run and double among his four hits, Ben Francisco went 3-for-5, Wilson Valdez was 2-for-4, and Halladay added a two- run single. The win, combined with Atlantas loss to the Mets on Tuesday, got the Phillies within two games of the NL East-leading Braves. Sean West (0-1), who was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday, took the loss after allowing five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits and a walk in five innings. Uggla went 3-for-4 for the Marlins, who were coming off a 4-3 road trip. Francisco opened the second by slugging a low slider to left for his fourth homer, and Ruiz followed by hitting a first-pitch fastball out to left-center, making it a 2-0 game. Uggla began the bottom half with his 24th homer of the season, but the Phillies expanded their lead in the fourth. With Francisco on base after a one-out single, Ruiz doubled to center to put runners in scoring position. After Cody Ransom popped out, West intentionally walked Valdez to get to Halladay, but the strategy backfired, as Halladay singled to the left side to plate two. "Guys on base, two outs, Im going to try and get three swings," said Halladay of his hitting approach. "Thats my goal. I think the chances of getting walked there are probably not real good, so Im gonna go up and try to get three swings. If I can get a ball somewhere in the zone and doink one in, Ill take it." Ruizs RBI single in the fifth pushed the Phillies lead to 5-1, and a single by Valdez in the seventh tacked on another run. Halladay, meanwhile, got out of a couple potentially dangerous situations to keep the Marlins in check. Florida had runners on first and second with one out in the fourth before Halladay got Cody Ross to foul out and fanned Mike Stanton. Then in the seventh, Ross and Stanton hit leadoff singles, but Halladay induced a double-play grounder from Ronny Paulino before getting Hector Luna to fly out. Chad Durbin threw two shutout innings after Halladay to seal the win. DETROIT - As his Michigan State teammates hustled downcourt, Kalin Lucas looked around at a stadium ablaze in green and white, turned on his megawatt smile and raised both his arms. Giants Super Bowl Jersey. No worries, he seemed to be saying, weve got you. Carrying an entire state knocked down by the economic crisis is a lot to ask of a group of college kids, but the Spartans are proving theyre more than up to the task. "It means so much, so much," said Magic Johnson, who sat just a few rows behind the Michigan State bench Saturday night. "Its been all bad news the last couple of years." Its nothing but good news now. Lucas scored 21 points, Raymar Morgan broke out of his late-season slump with 18 and nine rebounds, and the smaller Spartans ran roughshod over Hasheem Thabeet and Connecticut in an 82-73 upset in the Final Four on Saturday night. The Spartans (31-6) now will play North Carolina for the NCAA title Monday night, giving the city and state at least two more days to forget all the bad news and revel in their Spartans success. Its Michigan States first appearance in the title game since 2000, when the Spartans won their second title. "One thing we talked about is bringing hope to the city for a whole weekend," said Travis Walton, who dished out eight assists. "People forgetting about their problems, forgetting about what theyre going through, just focusing on us and focusing on Michigan State. "From the moment we were on that court and we won that game, people didnt think about what they was going through outside of this. They was just happy that we won and they can continue to cheer for us on Monday." Hows this for some karma? Johnson, Spartan-in-chief since leading Michigan State to its first title in 1979, will present the game ball before Mondays title game along with Larry Bird. "I hope we were a ray of sunshine, a distraction for them, a diversion, anything else we can be," coach Tom Izzo said. "Were not done yet, so hopefully we can continue to make them feel a little better and us feel a lot better." The loss is the latest blow for UConn, the best team in the country until Jerome Dyson went down with a knee injury in mid-February. The Huskies (31-5) have been dealing with distractions since last May, when coach Jim Calhoun was diagnosed with his third bout with cancer, and are now facing questions about alleged recruiting violations. The loss snapped Calhoun and Connecticuts perfect run in the Final Four. Theyd made it twice before - 1999 and 2004 - and went on to win the title each time. UConn cut an 11-point deficit to 4 in 49 seconds, getting within 3 with a minute to go. But the outcome was never really in doubt. Durrell Summers, a Detroit native who experienced firsthand the hardships his city and state are enduring when both parents were laid off, converted a three-point play to put the game out of reach. Flashbulbs popped throughout the arena as the final seconds ticked down. After huddling at midcourt, the Spartans walked to the edge of the floor and saluted the Final Four-record crowd of 72,456, about two-thirds of which was pulling for Michigan State. "It was a memorable game that I wont forget," Izzo said. "Except weve got another one." The UConn players walked slowly off the court, looking shell-shocked that their season had ended. Thabeet left with a towel draped over his face. "Ive got a lot of kids in there crying right now," Calhoun said. "But they had a great season. It hasnt been that easy to stay focused the past few weeks. But I give (Izzo) a great deal of credit." This was supposed to be a battle of big men. UConns Thabeet had been a one-man swat team, averaging a double-double and winning defensive player of the year in the burly Big East for a second straight year. Michigan States Goran Suton led the equally gritty Big Ten in rebounding and had averaged a double-double in the NCAA tournament. But the matchup never developed. The Spartans are veterans of the down-and-dirty Big Ten, but they can run some, too, and Izzo made no secret of his plan to use their speed to keep Thabeet out of his comfort zone. Thabeet led the Huskies with 17 points and six rebounds, but it was the quietest 17 points anyones ever had. He looked gassed from the opening tipoff, leaning over, tugging on his shorts and gasping for air not even six minutes into the game. Aside from the first few possessions of the second half, he actually looked lost down low. Or as lost as a seven-foot-three guy can look. "This ended up being who made the small plays made the big difference," Calhoun said. The most aggressive Thabeet got was at the end of the first half, getting in Marquise Grays face after Jeff Adrien and Walton got tangled up under Connecticuts basket. There was some pushing and shoving, prompting Calhoun to come all the way from the other end of the floor to calm his players. But the dust-up fizzled quickly, and no technicals were even called. Suton, who had the main job of corralling Thabeet, didnt score his first field goal until early in the second half and finished with four points and seven boards. Stanley Robinson and A.J. Price had 15 each for Connecticut, and Robinson added 13 rebounds. "We couldnt get back and theyre a good team in transition," Robinson said. "I just give them all the credit. Theyre a tough team." Morgan was Michigan States best player early on, but hes struggled to find his groove since missing three games in February with walking pneumonia. He had just seven points in Michigan States last three games - thats combined - and was 0-for-2 in the big win over Louisville in the Midwest Regional final. Granted, hes playing with a broken nose and a plastic mask, but Izzo has been all over him to be more aggressive. Apparently, he finally got the message. "We needed someone to step up, and he stepped up in a huge way," Izzo said. "Not only rebounding the ball, not only defending, not only being physical down there, but the way he scored and what he did." Morgan scored 11 in the first half, including a couple of big buckets when UConn was threatening to take off. Little Korie Lucious, the back-up point guard whos never met a shot he didnt like, was a key contributor early on, too, scoring nine points in a 1 1/2-minute span at the end of the first half. It was Morgan again in the second half, stripping Craig Austrie to start an 8-2 run that caught UConn flat-footed, all but ended the game and threatened to bring down the roof at Ford Field. Morgan stripped Austrie and dished to Draymond Green, who lumbered down the floor for an easy layup. Austrie missed a shot at the other end. Lucas - generously listed at 6-feet - grabbed the rebound and sprinted upcourt, splitting two Connecticut defenders with a shake-and-shimmy that gave him a wide-open layup. Wide open because those two defenders didnt have any help. Thabeet didnt even bother to run up the court to play defence, gasping for air with his hands on his hips. After another Huskies miss, Morgan grabbed the rebound and fired it to Allen, who scored on a finger roll to give Michigan State a 53-49 lead. The ball had barely dropped through the net when Calhoun barked for a timeout, and the Michigan State fans erupted. If Calhoun hoped the break would re-energize his team, he was wrong. Green made a jumper, Durrell Summers a three and Green converted a pair of free throws. After Price missed a jumper, Green made his own from the top of the key to give Michigan State a 72-54 lead with 7:52 to play. He and Lucas slapped hands as the crowd roared. "We love yall!" Lucas yelled to the crowd during a post-game interview. "We love Detroit!" BenJarvus Green-Ellis Womens Jersey. HOUSTON - Houston forward Ron Artest will sit out the next two games with a sprained right ankle, leaving the injury-riddled Rockets with barely enough practice players. Super Bowl Jersey. Tracy McGrady practised Thursday and may return ahead of schedule from a knee injury. But Yao Ming skipped the workout because of a cold, leaving the team with only 10 players for the practice. "Weve got to win games and keep our heads above water," said Houston coach Rick Adelman said. "If were going to have injuries like this, you just have to win as many as you can." Artest sat out Mondays loss in Memphis, the first game hes missed this season. He had an MRI exam Tuesday that revealed damaged ligaments in the ankle, an old injury that Artest recently re-aggravated. Later that night, Artest played 39 minutes and scored 19 points in a win over Atlanta. But Artest wont travel with the Rockets for their road games against Golden State on Friday and the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday. He did not practise with the team Thursday. "He has a bad ankle, we know that," Adelman said. "Hes going to play that one game (against Atlanta), and have seven or eight days off, so youre hoping it responds to that." McGrady has missed Houstons last seven games with soreness in his left knee, the lingering effect of off-season surgery. He said last Tuesday that he would be out another three weeks, but Adelman said McGrady went full speed in practice on Thursday. McGrady did not speak to reporters after the workout. Adelman said McGrady would not play "extended" minutes Friday because his stamina is down. "It was good to see him out there," Adelman said. "He went through the whole scrimmage. He got tired, but he didnt limp. Its just conditioning at this point." Sharp-shooting reserve Brent Barry, whos missed eight games with a torn calf muscle, also practised Thursday. He was going to join the team on the weekend trip, but doubted he would be ready to play by Friday. Barry, who missed eight games last season with a similar injury to his left calf, thought he might have returned too soon. He strained the calf a few weeks later and sat out another 20 games. "This is something I definitely dont want to rush back into," Barry said. "Today was the first day I had a chance to run and get bumped around and make cuts and do basketball-type things. Today was a great sign, a great indication that things are progressing." Adelman is being careful with Shane Battier, who missed the first 15 games this season with inflammation in his left foot. Hes averaged 28 minutes in six games since, but Adelman is concerned about Battier playing back-to-back games. The Rockets managed to move into first place in the Southwest Division, even though they havent had everyone on the roster healthy at the same time. Forwards Luis Scola and Carl Landry are the only Rockets whove played in all 22 games, and Scola is the only one whos started all of them. McGrady, Yao and Battier have missed a total of 24 games to injuries already, leaving Adelman to mix and match lineups and rely heavily on bench players. "I think the best Christmas present for Coach Adelman would be to actually give him his lineup," Barry said. "To this point, we have still not had a full complement of players available for one regular-season game. For the team, its disappointing, for our fans, its disappointing. "Wed obviously like to get everybody in uniform, on the court, and try to see what weve got." Tom Brady Womens Jersey. De Silvestro burned both hands last week when her car slammed into a wall in practice, went airborne and flipped several times before coming to a rest upside down and in flames. On Friday, she plans to spend the final hour of Indianapolis 500 practice on the track, fine-tuning her backup car. Shes hoping adrenaline helps numb the pain in her burned hands, especially during Sundays three-hour race. "The race will be tough," she said. "Its hurting quite a bit now, but its important for me to do as many laps as we can. Theres no backup plan that I know of." HVM Racing owner Keith Wiggins wouldnt think of it after qualifying weekend. After De Silvestros No. 78 car skidded down the track last week, Wiggins said the team considered using a replacement driver for qualifying. Two days later, though, the tough 22-year-old Swiss driver produced one of the gutsiest qualifying runs in years at the famed Brickyard. On her final Pole Day qualifying attempt, De Silvestro put up a four-lap qualifying average of 224.392 miles per hour, good enough to put her safely in the field. It made her an instant favourite among fans and colleagues. "I dont think its the hand injury as much as the fact that she got back in the car so quick after a bad accident. Its amazing,&quuot; points leader Will Power said. Super Bowl BenJarvus Green-Ellis Jersey"She was very brave." Now can she complete 500 miles with the most talked about hands in racing? For Wiggins, its Simona or bust. Because changing drivers would require changing the custom-fitted seat -- a move that would take them out of contention -- Wiggins said the team has not lined up a backup driver. "You look at the grid and the number of professional drivers, and theres just not too many people who can just jump into a car," Wiggins said. "It did go through our minds at one stage of qualifying, but weve moved on from there." Clearly, De Silvestro is hurting. On Sunday, doctors peeled the burned skin off her hands, now covered in bandages from the middle of her fingers past her wrist. She expects the bandages to stay on for another 15 to 20 days. De Silvestro and her medical team also are trying to come up with solutions to make Sundays race more bearable. Doctors have tried to dull the pain with "freeze" treatments and have given her special gloves, which De Silvestro planned to test during Fridays practice. If all else fails, well, theres always her ability to tough things out. "It will be different, but I think youll get used to it," she said. "I think once youre in the race adrenaline takes over, and youll get used to it." ' ' '

CALGARY - The Vancouver Canucks overcame a spectacular goaltending performance from Miikka Kiprusoff to pick up an important two points against a bitter division rival Tuesday night. Wes Welker Jersey. Ryan Kesler scored twice, Kevin Bieksa tied the game in the final minute and Pavol Demitra scored the shootout winner as the Canucks kicked off a four-game road trip with a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames. Despite being thwarted time and again by Kiprusoff, Vancouver kept pressing. With goalie Roberto Luongo pulled for an extra attacker the Canucks finally drew even on Bieksas point shot through a crowd with 51 seconds remaining. "I had three or four shots in a row but they kept being blocked or I missed the net,"Bieksa said. "But the puck kept coming back to me and I found a way to squeak one in there." After overtime solved nothing, Demitra scored the shootouts only goal, snapping a shot from close in past through a frozen Kiprusoffs pads. After misses by Michael Cammalleri and Jarome Iginla, former Canuck Todd Bertuzzi nearly tied the shootout, but with Luongo completely fooled, his nifty spin-a-round backhander rang off the post. Bertuzzi broke his stick on the ice in frustration. Vancouver (28-21-8) improves to 6-1-0 in its last seven and moves to within 10 points of the Northwest Division-leading Flames. Jarome Iginla, Daymond Langkow and Rene Bourque scored for Calgary (33-18-6). The Flames have picked up points in five straight (3-0-2). Iginla also added an assist giving him 823 career points (395 goals, 428 assists), moving him past Al MacInnis (822) into second place on the Flames all-time scoring list. Theoren Fleury (830) sits in top spot. Bourques 20th goal of the season at 6:52 of the third gave Calgary a 3-2 lead. Bieksa got caught pinching at the Flames blue-line, enabling Bourque and Iginla to break up the ice on a 2-on-1. Iginla moved the puck forward to Bourque darting down the left wing and wired a shot that just squeezed in under Luongos arm. "I picked them up in the first 40 minutes and then they picked me up at the end," said Luongo, who finished with 38 saves. "We didnt play our best hockey the first two periods and then with us still tied I give up that goal. But thats what we do as a team, we try to bail each other out and tonight, you saw both sides of that." Of the numerous sensational saves Kiprusoff made, his best came on a Canucks power-play with less than 10 minutes to go. With Vancouver pressing for the tying goal and seemingly out of position on a Kyle Wellwood shot, Kiprusoff dove all the way across the net and with the paddle of his stick knocked the puck out of the air, denying the Canucks a sure goal. The sell-out crowd of 19,289 immediately rose to their feet and continued to chant "Kipper, Kipper" as the Jumbotron showed the replay over and over. Kiprusoff finished up with 40 stops. "I thought I had an empty net but somehow he was able to reach back and stop it right on the goal line. Thats definitely the best save Ive ever had to deal with," said Wellwood. "Ive seen that kind of thing in road hockey but to do it in a game like he did there was pretty impressive." While players on both teams talked in awe about that play after the game, Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault had a different take. "Kyle got what he deserves, I mean he is not bearing down and had an open net. Hes shooting the puck two miles an hour. You have to bear down, you have to put your full weight into it and you have to shoot it," said Vigneault. "Obviously it looked like the goalie made a big save, but the player didnt have a great attempt." All the scoring in the second period came in the final three minutes. Kesler made it 2-1 at 17:05 on his second goal of the night. The lead lasted just over a minute before Langkow tied it by chipping the puck past Luongo. Calgary took a 1-0 lead when Bourque and Craig Conroy combined to set up Iginlas 21st goal of the season. For the slumping Flames captain, it was his first goal in eight games. "I felt better this game," said Iginla. "I need to just keep building on this and start relaxing. Tonight, personally, it felt like a step in the right direction to get going again," said Iginla. Notes: Wellwoods high-sticking penalty in the first period ended a string of 159 games without a penalty for the Vancouver forward. It had been three seasons since Wellwood was last in the penalty box, a minor penalty he took on Apr. 11, 2006 versus Florida... Calgary rookie RW Brandon Prust (broken jaw) has been declared healthy after missing 30 games but he did get back in the line-up as the Flames went with the identical line-up theyve used in the past 12 games... PARIS - Seven-time defending champion Lyon was held to a 0-0 draw at Auxerre in its third straight match without a win in the French league on Saturday. Wes Welker Womens Jersey. Lyon will lose the top spot if Marseille beats Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday. Auxerres strikers had chances to win the match. Kevin Lejeune and Ireneusz Jelen both hit the post and Dennis Oliech fluffed a one-on-one with Lyon goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre in the 82nd. It was a tough match, Lyon coach Claude Puel said. Were not going to make any excuses but its an away match and, given what happened, we can be happy with a point. Lyon hopes to bounce back against winless Sochaux on Wednesday. After 10 rounds, Lyon has 21 points, only two clear of Marseille. Third-place Le Mans and fourth-place Bordeaux both squandered leads and have 18 points, as does Toulouse. Bordeaux led 2-0 and drew 2-2 at Nice, Le Mans twice led in a 2-2 draw at Rennes, and fifth-place Toulouse drew 0-0 with Monaco. Its a very tough league and every point is important, Puel said. We have to keep that in mind and fight. Also, it was Lorient 3, Nantes 0; Lille 2, Caen 2; and Le Havre 2, Valenciennes 1. Lyon midfielder Ederson headed over a cross from Fabio Grosso and winger Abdulkader Keita hit the crossbar with an audacious lob from 30 yards as the French champions pressured early on. But Lyons defence was almost caught out in the 12th when Jelens low shot was saved by Vercoutre, Lejeune headed against a post in the 31st, and Ghanaian midfielder Moussa Narry headed wide from close range when unmarked in the 42nd. Auxerre goalkeeper Remy Riou made a spectacular save in the 56th to keep out Juninhos free kick, but Auxerre threatened again when Jelen hit the post in the 64th. Goals by Gervinho and a penalty kick from Mathieu Coutadeur gave Le Mans a 2-1 lead at halftime, with Jimmy Briand getting a goal for Rennes with a neat lob after running onto a precise pass from strike partner Mickael Pagis. Pagis equalized in the 78th when he chested down a pass from Sylvain Wiltord and finished calmly. Brazilian winger Wendel gave Bordeaux the lead in the 11th with a curling free kick from 35 yards, and forward Fernando Cavenaghi made it 2-0 with a penalty kick in the 57th. Eric Mouloungui replied in the 84th and Loic Remys penalty in the sixth minute of injury time made it 2-2. At Le Havre, Luigi Pieroni scored in the second minute to give Valenciennes the lead, only for veteran striker Jean-Michel Lesage to level for Le Havre in the 24th and seal the win in the 48th with another clinical finish. Two goals by Ludovic Obraniak put Lille 2-0 up by the interval. The midfielder got his first after nine minutes and added another goal in the 39th with a powerful finish after collecting a pass from Brazilian forward Tulio De Melo. Caen defender Nicolas Seube pulled a goal back straight after the interval, and Steve Savidan equalized in the 64th. Fabrice Abriel got Lorients opening goal in the 31st after good work from Jeremy Morel and Yann Jouffre. The Scottish driver set the early tone in the final stage of Saturdays qualifying, and his time held up to earn him the pole for Sundays Honda Indy Toronto. Franchitti clinched the ninth pole of his career with a blistering run of one minute 1.0249 seconds. He averaged 103.532 miles per hour around the 1.755-mile temporary road course at Exhibition Place, taking advantage of a surprisingly dry track after a morning of rain and lightning that made for treacherous driving conditions early on. "With the changes we made in qualifying, the car was good out of the box," said Franchitti, who sits second in the overall drivers standings. "The lap I did in the (final qualifying stage) . . . I came in afterwards. I said, `Thats it. That was a hell of a lap, as good a lap as Ive driven around here, and if they can go quicker, let them have at it, because thats all shes got." The bizarre weather conditions forced teams to make drastic changes, most notably a switch from wet to dry tires. Franchitti, runner-up Will Power and Canadian Alex Tagliani were among those who succeeded in the tire switch. Power, the defending champion, will join Franchitti on the front row after crossing the line in 1:10.2851. Power, who competes for Penske Racing, is making just his fourth start of the season and says running a part-time season has been a challenge. "Its excellent to be back in a car," said Power. "Its been tough watching, to be honest." American Graham Rahal and Britains Justin Wilson make up Row 2. Rahal qualified third in 1:01.3301, followed by Wilson in 1:01.5157. Tagliani, from Lachenaie, Que., earned his best start of the season with a run of 1:01.6980. Its been an up-and-down season for Tagliani, who drives a part-time schedule for Conquest Racing. Though he would like to be in the car more regularly, he said hell take what he can get -- particularly when it means getting the chance to drive in Canada. "Its very rewarding for the team," said Tagliani. "The Canadian races are very important on the schedule. There arent a lot of drivers in the series who can say they have two races in their country, so (Im) really grateful for that." Paul Tracy wasnt so fortunate, as the Toronto native finished a disappointing 15th in qualifying. The local favourite set the pace in the wet morning practice session, but battled understeer once the track dried and missed reaching the second stage of qualifying by mere fractions. "Im super frustrated," said Tracy, a two-time winner in Toronto. "We wanted to make it into the topp-12, and we missed it by a hundredth of a second. Victor Cruz Womens Jersey The car just wasnt very good." Danica Patrick and Helio Castroneves also struggled in qualifying. Patrick, who had miserable practice sessions Friday, followed those up with an 18th-place showing Saturday. The crowd favourite, who finished second behind Tracy in the soggy morning session, blamed the afternoon sun for her troubles. "We had a pretty decent car during the morning session, even though it was the worst track conditions you would drive in," said Patrick. "But once the track dried, we lost all the grip. "I dont know what the solution is, but as a team we are all behind the eight-ball and its really frustrating for me and my teammates." Castroneves was irate after being stuck behind other cars late in the second qualifying stage, hampering his ability to put up a fast time. Hell start 10th. "I got caught in a lot of traffic," said Castroneves. "I lost about three laps there because of the traffic in front of me." Nearly everyone agreed that starting positions arent as important on the Toronto course, where accidents are frequent and passing spots are plentiful. "Im sure people at the back . . . middle to the back will try to make things happen through passing cars and through strategy," said Franchitti. "Youve got to use everything youve got in your arsenal here to try to get up front. If youre up front, youve got to try to stay up front. Usual story." Even Tracy, who was still steaming 15 minutes after he was eliminated from qualifying, remained optimistic about Sunday. "Its going to be tough, but its a street circuit and anything can happen," said Tracy. "I have to get the car through Turn 1 at the start and not get collected in a crash. Then just settle into a pace, work our race strategy, save fuel and the tires and see what happens." Steady rain and lightning delayed the morning practice for more than an hour -- and it didnt take long for the slick track to claim its first victim when practice resumed. Brazilian driver Tony Kanaan lost control around a corner on his first practice lap and smashed into the wall, crumpling the back end of his car. He was helped from the wreck but appeared to be okay. Immediately after the caution was lifted, Ryan Hunter-Reay spun into a tire wall, while Marco Andretti skidded out and ended up backwards next to the barrier. Moments later, Ed Carpenter ended up in a similar position, brushing up against the barrier. Even Tracy had some difficulty late in the session, spinning sideways and winding up in the middle of the track. ' ' '

ATLANTA - About 200 Atlanta Thrashers fans gathered on Saturday to tailgate outside Philips Arena for perhaps the final time. Osi Umenyiora Jersey. With the Thrashers reportedly close to being sold and moving to Winnipeg, fans blamed the teams ownership group, the Atlanta Spirit, for the clubs seemingly imminent departure next week. The annual "select-a-seat" event, that the Thrashers debuted in 1999, is staged for current and potential season-ticket buyers to come and check out the seats, look at the ice and talk about the upcoming NHL draft. Now the future is uncertain, at best. "Weve been lied to for six years," Jenn Peters, 30, said while choking back tears as she flipped through a collection of ticket stubs. "Its hard to watch as a fan because theres nothing you can do but show up. You can voice your opinion and you can show up, but thats all you can do." It hardly helped the mood that Harry the Hawk, the mascot of Atlantas NBA club that is also owned by the Atlanta Spirit, rode up on a scooter, hopped off and handed out some high-fives before stopping to put his mouth over the head of Zanna Huff, a bystander wearing a Thrashers jersey. "Now hes trying to eat my girlfriends head, which is disgusting," said Bryce McNeil, a 33-year-old professor at Georgia State. "Having Harry the Hawk here -- its not that I have anything against the Hawks, but its the Atlanta Spirit shoving their other asset in our face, which is just deplorable." Thrash, the hockey teams mascot, didnt make it out in the 30 C heat until three hours into the event, but no players or members of the front office were in attendance. On the Internet, atlantathrashers.com didnt mention the gathering, but salespeople were inside the arena processing credit card orders. Howard Baron, a 54-year-old CPA and investment adviser, blamed the Spirit for all that went wrong, but also held out hope while holding up a small sign that read, "Dewey Defeats Truman." Baron had just walked into the arena with his son, Michael, to buy four more season tickets and push his total to 16. "This city will support a team," Baron said. "Youve just got to get rid of the management. Its a very poorly run organization and what (NHL commissioner) Gary Bettman said the other night was true -- that its a funny way to show it by not buying tickets -- but the problem is if you come and buy tickets youre stuck with this ownership group forever. Its a double-edged sword." It seemed appropriate that the team had no promotional presence at the "Gulch," the local nickname for the poorly paved parking lot outside Philips Arena and the Georgia Dome. This get-together was all about the fans and ownerships betrayal, said Deborah Petersen, a 36-year-old massage therapist. She and her husband, Joe, were engaged at a December 2006 game. Those were great days for the Thrashers, who were legitimate playoff contenders and had two compelling scorers in Ilya Kovalchuk and Marian Hossa. "There it was on the scoreboard scroll, Deborah, will you marry me?" Petersen said. "We havent missed a game in six years. Its a big deal to us." Blame also spread to the NHL and Bettman for seemingly being complicit in rushing the teams sale and move. Around the parking lot, a Bob Dylan quote from the 1965 song, "Desolation Row," was posted in several spots -- "And here comes the blind commissioner. Theyve got him in a trance." "If this goes through, I can promise you I will never go to another hockey game or an NHL event as long as I live," Peters said. "I wont give them another dime of my money. They have not stood up for this team. They stand by and watch everything go down. If they hadnt touched Phoenix (to keep the Coyotes from moving to Winnipeg), we wouldnt be in this mess. They wouldnt be rushing to sell to this group." It wont be the first time for NHL ownership to betray Bill Sengstacken, a Thrashers season-ticket holder every season and a local marketing and branding executive. He was a Hartford Whalers fan when they moved to Carolina and became the Hurricanes. The Thrashers potential move is more hurtful to Sengstacken, who oversees a fan group called Nasty Nest in the 300 section of Philips Arena. The group often travels together to support the team on the road. "Weve been like the redheaded stepchild of Atlanta sports," Sengstacken said. "(The Atlanta Spirit puts) money into the Hawks, and I appreciate that for the basketball team, but hockey is a great game, too, and in this market in particular youve got to market." Serena Williams of the US hits a return against Patty Schnyder of Switzerland at the Rome Masters tennis tournament in Rome May 6, 2009. BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Thomas Vanek finds it hard to believe it took the Buffalo Sabres four months to enjoy their first three-game winning streak. A bigger surprise for the Sabres leading scorer is how the team, despite its inconsistencies, suddenly finds itself back in the playoff picture. If you dont win three in a row in a long season, youre usually in the bottom of the league, Vanek said Friday. But the position were in, were pretty happy about it. Now weve got to go for the fourth one and then the fifth, and put a run together. The Sabres have, in fact, been on a roll for more than a month in overcoming what had been a dreadful start compounded by the loss of top-line center Derek Roy to a season-ending leg injury in late December. With a 3-2 overtime win at Florida on Thursday, the Sabres are 12-4-1 in their past 17 games. Its a surge that has allowed Buffalo to go from 10 points out of playoff contention on Dec. 27 to within three points of eighth-place Atlanta. You win a few games, you feel better about yourself. You kind of get that swagger back, Vanek said. Were feeling comfortable, confident and finding ways to win. Much of the credit goes to Vanek, as well as wingers Drew Stafford and Jason Pominville. The trio has combined to score 25 of the teams 60 goals (not including a shootout victory) over the 17-game stretch to fill the offensive void left by Roys absence. I think its been key, coach Lindy Ruff said of the offense the group has provided. Theres no getting away from the fact that we were going to need our best players to be our best players. Vanek leads the team with 23 goals and 48 points, with 23 of those points (nine goals, 14 assists) coming in his past 17 games. Stafford has already matched a career best with 20 goals despite missing 18 games to an assortment of injuries. And hee joins the Rangers Marian Gaborik and Washingtons Alex Semin as the NHLs only players to have three three-goal games this season. Jason Pierre-Paul Authentic Jersey Stafford credited the midseason turnaround to a maturing and jelling process that was slow in materializing for a team that got off to a 3-9-2 start and was winless in its first seven home games (0-6-1). I just think were learning our lessons, he said. We werent finding ways to win. And I think now, weve kind of grown in a short period of time. The Sabres are winning despite a drop-off in play of goalie Ryan Miller, who has been inconsistent after winning the Vezina Trophy last year. His 2.68 goals-against average is tied for 26th in the NHL and his .913 save percentage is 25th. Miller is tied for seventh with 24 wins while continuing to be the Sabres workhorse in having appeared in 44 games, including 30 straight. Its unclear when Miller will get a rest, though the Sabres open a busy stretch Sunday when theyll play five games in eight days starting with a home game against the New York Islanders. Miller was nagged by injuries early in the season, and is also taking advantage of any rest days to stay fresh. The goalie joined many of his teammates on Friday in not taking part in the teams optional practice. Weve got ourselves in a good position and we kind of have our fate in our own hands a lot more now than we did even two weeks ago, Miller said. Were right in the middle of it now. Theres a long, long way to go, a lot of tough hockey games ahead of us. Notes: Ruff acknowledged that D Steve Montador has missed the past two games due to concussion-related symptoms. ... RW Patrick Kaleta has a chance to return Sunday after missing six games with a left hand injury. ... D Tyler Myers, who scored in overtime against Florida, has seven goals this season, five of them game-winners. ' ' '

VANCOUVER -- Mats Sundin says he has no regrets over his decision to play for the Vancouver Canucks this NHL season, but hasnt decided yet if he will return next year. Ahmad Bradshaw Jersey. If he does play again, money wont be the deciding factor. "It wont be a money issue, whether or not Im going to play," Sundin, 38, said Wednesday as the Canucks cleaned out their lockers. "You want to have a chance to win. "I am going to take my time to make a good decision this summer. Right now I wouldnt know what my future is going to be, whether I am going to play or not." The Canucks were eliminated from the playoffs Monday after a 7-5 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinal. It was the first time Sundin has played in the playoffs since the 2003-04 season. The former Toronto Maple Leaf captain signed a US$5.6-million, free-agent contract with the Canucks in December. He had nine goals and 28 points in 41 games. "Coming to Vancouver I had a different role than I did in Toronto," he said. "I felt the last month and a half I played as well as I did in Toronto the last couple of years. "I felt my skating and everything else felt better and better." Sundin had three goals and eight points in eight playoff games. He missed two games with a knee injury. "I played more in the playoffs," he said. "The last couple of games I got more ice time. I really enjoyed the role I had. "The production during the regular season obviously wasnt the same as it has been in the previous years." The six-foot-five, 231-pound centre had averaged just over a point a game during his 17-year career before coming to Vancouver. The nine-time all-star scored 32 goals in his last season with Toronto. Sundin knew missing half a season would make it difficult for him to return to his old form. "I knew it was going to be a challenge coming in at Christmas," he said. "It was nothing I regretted. "I felt very fortunate to get a chance to play again in the playoffs." Sundin said he enjoyed Vancouver. "My experience and my season here, I am very glad I got a chance to join the Canucks and be a part of this team," he said. "Its been a great experience for me." The 2010 Winter Olympics coming to Vancouver wont sway his decision about retirement. "Probably not," said Sundin, who was a member of the Swedish team that won the gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics. "My last game for the national team we won the final in Turin. On October 8th, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo, a law offender who was convicted by Chinas judiciary of agitation aimed at subverting the government. Just as the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson puts it, the Nobel Committees decision was blasphemy to and a violation of the principles of the Peace Prize. Norwegian jurist and writer Fredrik S. Heffermehl calls it a wrong decision and a distortion of Nobels wishes by politicians. Rebelión, a Spanish newspaper, asks in a commentary: what has peace got to do with opposition groups, which are ever present in all nations? The decision, a brazen challenge to Chinas judicial authority which deeply hurts Chinese peoples feelings, raises serious doubts to the motivation, sincerity and credibility of the Nobel Peace Prize – is the current peace prize still the peace prize of what we remember or imagine? What intentions and purposes lurk behind the frequent surprise prize winners? A Peace Prize shrouded in constant skepticism On December 10, 1896, the 63-year-old Alfred Nobel died of a stroke at Sanremo, Italy, after spending much of his life in disease-afflicted pain. The year before, on November 27, the Swedish chemist and inventor, who won 355 patents, had written his third – and last – will, in which he dictated that his fortune be used to create a series of prizes for those who confer the greatest benefit on mankind in physics, chemistry, peace, physiology or medicine, and literature. On December 10, 1901, the fifth anniversary of Nobels death, the prizes were first awarded. Related readings: Liu Xiaobo and Nobel Peace Prize are both farce Liu Xiaobos Nobel Peace Prize could harm China-Norway ties Liu Xiaobo arrested for subversion According to Nobels wishes, the Peace Prize should be awarded to those who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses. The Norwegian Nobel Committee awards the peace prize each year. It is consisted of five members, whose term is six years. All five members are elected by the Norwegian parliament. Since the peace prize was first handed out, 98 persons and 20 organizations have been awarded. When Nobel first set up the peace prize, he knowingly moved the award to Oslo, Norway – which was part of Sweden at that time, but far from the political center – to reduce the influence of Swedish political parties in light of the controversy the peace prize might arouse. Over the past century, the prize winners have gained considerable respect from the international community, including the general public in China. However, Nobel would never have imagined that his ingenious plan still could not prevent the peace-promoting prize from degenerating into a political tool. In the wake of the changing international climate during the Cold War, the peace prize gradually took on an ideologically-tainted cover, turning into an instrument of peaceful evolution in countries whose political systtems didnt square with those of the West. Eli Manning New York Giants Jersey From Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov to Lech Wa??sa to Mikhail Gorbachev, the change in the peace prize winners is just a reflection of East Europes sea transformation, the disintegration of the former USSR, and the end of the Cold War with the West as victors. Mr Nobels sincere wish to safeguard peace and ethnic unity has been distorted, and thats why people begin to doubt the meaning of the peace prize. As the Cold War ended, the peace prize lapsed further into a sharp weapon for the Western countries to spread their values and development models – under the disguise of human rights first. In the last decade, half of the prize winners are human rights fighters like Myanmars Aung San Suu Kyi and Irans human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi. We could barely see those who fight truly for peace and disarmament during the award presentation ceremony. The peace prize is veering ever further away from what Nobel first intended for. Even the Dalai Lama was awarded the prize in 1989. It is therefore no surprise that the Norwegian Nobel Committee chose Liu Xiaobo today. It has been 109 years since the establishment of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Because of its selection of peace prize winners, the committee has never failed to draw controversy. In recent years, the Norwegian academic community has constantly questioned the justifiability of committees formation, its faithfulness to execute Nobels will and its independence. First and foremost, whether the distribution of committee seats based on party affiliations is true to Nobels original intentions. According to Nobels will, the Nobel committee should be composed by five Norwegians, all elected by the Norwegian parliament. But the reputation, not the criteria, of the peace prize, won so much over the Storting (the parliament) that it decided to only allocate the committee members seats to the five top political parties in the Storting for the purpose of favoring all the political groups, one seat for each party, thus making five veteran politicians to share the five seats. The distribution of committee seats has made the prize actually a prize of the Norwegian Storting. Second, whether the Nobel committee faithfully carried out Nobels will. Nobel made it quite clear in his will as to who should win the peace award. But Norwegian jurist and writer Fredrik S. Heffermehl concludes in his new book The Nobel Peace Prize: What Nobel Really Wanted that the selection of more than half of the peace prize winners has disregarded what Nobel first intended and run counter to his will. He said Nobel established the prize for the champions of peace to support their efforts at disarmament and peace movement rather than for the broadened conception of peace best suited to Nobel committees political needs. When the award was presented to Liu Xiaobao, Mr Heffermehl reiterated his conclusion that Liu is not the peace fighter in Nobels will and it is inappropriate to give him the award. On va voir. ' ' '

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Alexander Semins shootout goal lifted the Washington Capitals to a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night and pulled them within one point of first place in the Eastern Conference. Jason Pierre-Paul Youth Jersey. Playing without star forward Alex Ovechkin for the first time this season, the Capitals took an early three-goal lead and seemed on their way to tying Philadelphia for the top spot. But the Flyers scored four straight and earned a point by going into overtime. Semin beat Brian Boucher with a nifty move and backhanded a shot into the top corner for the winner. Ville Leino, whose shootout goal gave the Flyers a victory at Dallas on Saturday night, scored on the first shot. Matt Hendricks answered for the Capitals. Claude Giroux was next and he couldnt get a shot off on Michal Neuvirth. Nicklas Backstrom then beat Boucher. Danny Briere kept the Flyers alive when he scored, but Semin ended it. NEW YORK (AP) - Brandon Dubinsky broke up a scoreless game 7:49 into the third period and Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves as the New York Rangers used defense to beat the Florida Panthers and stretch their winning streak to a season-high five games. New York had been surging on the strength of its newly found offense that produced 17 goals in the previous three games - including at least five in each win. The Rangers have won seven of eight overall, scoring 34 goals in that stretch. Lundqvist was hardly tested in earning his NHL-best 10th shutout of the season - second over Florida - and 34th of his career. He showed no ill-effects of a sore neck sustained Friday in a win over Montreal. He followed that with a victory at Pittsburgh on Sunday. MONTREAL (AP) - Ryan Miller made 31 saves for his fourth shutout and Nathan Gerbe scored twice to lead the Buffalo Sabres past the Montreal Canadiens. Miller recorded his 21st career shutout, his first since a 36-save effort in a 3-0 win over San Jose on Jan. 6. Gerbe scored for the third game in a row in the second period before adding an empty-net goal for Buffalo, which is currently in the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 81 points. The Sabres remained three points ahead of ninth-place Carolina, which beat Ottawa. Buffalo was unable to gain ground on seventh-place New York as the Rangers shut out Florida 1-0 to retain their three-point lead over the Sabres. BOSTON (AP) - Zdeno Chara broke a tie midway through the second period and Milan Lucic scored his 30th goal of the season late in the third as the Boston Bruins beat the New Jersey Devils. The Devils, who committed one penalty in their previous two games, were called for five in the first two periods, and the Bruins struggling power-play unit finally came through. Boston had scored just twice on its previous 34 power-play opportunities entering the game. New Jersey took a 1-0 lead on Ilya Kovalchuks 27th goal at 11:05 of the first period. Shawn Thornton tied it less than six minutes later. Boston won for just the second time in eight games after winning seven straight. New Jersey is 1-3 after going 23-3-2 in its previous 28 games. RALEIGH, N.C (AP) - Chad LaRose scored two goals and Cam Ward made 36 saves to lead the Carolina Hurricanes past the Ottawa Senators. Tuomo Ruutu also scored, and Cory Stillman added a goal in the third period for Carolina, which began the night three points behind eighth-place Buffalo in the Eastern Conference. LaRose scored late in the first and second periods to help the Hurricanes recover from a 2-0 first-period deficit. The Hurricanes scored four times on their first 19 shots against Curtis McElhinney despite continued struggles on the power play. Carolina was scoreless on three man-advantages Tuesday, dropping to four for its last 77 on the power play. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Al Montoya made 36 saves, helping the New York Islanders to a victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Nate Thompson put Tampa Bay ahead 61 seconds in, lifting a rebound past Montoya. But, the Islanders scored four straight goals before Thompson helped set up a goal by Dominic Moore with the Lightning holding a two-man advantage midway through the third period. Josh Bailey scored first for New York with 10 seconds left on a power play midway through the opening period, depositing a rebound off a shot by Milan Jurcina. The Islanders took the lead when Kyle Okposo redirected a shot past former teammate Dwayne Roloson at 5:16 of the second. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - David Legwand scored a goal and added an assist as the Nashville Predators beat the Edmonton Oilers. Martin Erat, Patric Hornqvist also scored for Nashville, which has won four straight. Jordan Eberle scored for Edmonton, which has dropped seven in a row. The Predators pelted Devan Dubnyk with 15 shots in the first period while holding Edmonton to five shots on goal. ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Joffrey Lupul and Mikhail Grabovski each scored goals to get Torontos top two lines going and lead the Maple Leafs to a victory over Minnesota, stretching the Wilds winless streak to seven games. Rookie goalie James Reimer posted his third career shutout and won his third straight start, improving to 7-0-1 in his last eight road games and helping Toronto keep pace in the Eastern Conference playoff chase. The 10th-place Maple Leafs, the NHLs second-youngest team, are a long shot with eight games to go and eighth-place Buffalo still five points ahead. Space plane can help launch space weapons, be used for anti-satellite purposes BEIJING - The latest spacecraft launched by the United States has triggered concerns over a new arms race in space that could jeopardize world peace, Chinese military researchers said on Friday. The US Air Force launched unmanned spacecraft X-37B with a rocket from Floridas Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Thursday evening local time, media reported. The spacecraft is designed to fly in low orbit for as long as nine months. The X-37B looks like a space shuttle orbiter, with a similar shape and payload bay for cargo and experiments. But unlike US space shuttles that can stay in orbit for only about two weeks and are costly to maintain, X-37B can reportedly be used repeatedly with less costs. The space plane is meant to serve as a test platform for unspecified experiments before gliding to an autonomous runway landing, the US Air Force said. The US military has only made the general description of the mission objectives of its latest space launch public - to test of guidance, navigation, control, thermal protection and autonomous operations in orbit, re-entry and landing, media reported. This launch helps ensure that our warfighters will be provided the capabilities they need in the future, said Colonel Andre Lovett, a launch official and vice-commander of the Air Forces 45th Space Wing, in a statement on Thursday. However, the ultimate purpose of the X-37B and details about it remain a mystery. Experts said the spacecraft is also intended to speed up the development of combbat-support and weapons systems. Giants Phil Simms Jersey The spacecraft is the worlds only reusable operational spaceship and an important breakthrough of space technologies, said Zhao Xiaozhuo, a research fellow of military studies under Chinas Academy of Military Science of the Peoples Liberation Army. The space plane is considered to hold potential military value as it can serve combat-support systems and become a platform for launching space weapons, Zhao said. It can also be easily used for anti-satellite purposes, he said. As a superpower, the US has been calling for nuclear disarmament all these years and urged other countries to be more responsible for world peace and safety, Zhao said. But in the meantime, its development of the space plane may lead to an arms race in space. Zhai Dequan, deputy secretary-general of the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association, said the impact of the space plane may not be serious enough to trigger an arms race in space, but it has demonstrated US resolve to take a leading position in it. The US has previously said that it would slow down the pace of developing the space plane project. But now with the launch, it shows the US has never really slowed down, Zhai said. The space plane has the potential to destroy other nations satellites, which will help the US take the lead in space, he said. China has always insisted on the peaceful exploration of outer space, Zhai said. It is urgent for all countries to reach an agreement to avoid weaponizing outer space. AP contributed to the story. Charged by Englands Football Association for swearing into a television camera while angrily celebrating a league goal on Saturday, Rooneys face four days later was a picture of happiness as he was mobbed by his teammates in front of Chelseas fans to celebrate his 13th United goal of the season. "Wayne got a lot of abuse and late tackles but he played his game," Ferguson said. "He was important on the counterattack and he was in tremendous form and he has given us a great chance of reaching the semi." Up to the goal, Chelsea had edged proceedings but lacked a killer touch, with Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba again failing to gel up front. United also looked the more composed, especially in midfield where the evergreen Giggs showed his class. The hosts came close to equalizing in first-half injury time when Drogbas cross was missed by Torres and ended up hitting the post. Frank Lampard, making his 500th appearance for Chelsea, pounced on the rebound but his shot was cleared off the line by Patrice Evra. Chelsea threatened to equalize in the second half, with Torres header in the 74th forcing a fine save out of Edwin van der Sar and Michael Essien also going close. Referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco then refused Chelsea what looked like a clear penalty in second-half stoppage time, when Evra got away with chopping down Ramires just inside the area. "I think everybody saw what happened, you can see clearly on the TV," Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech said. "But the most important person did not see it. We lost the game and we have left ourselves a mountain to climb." United has never lost a Champions League knockout match when it has won the first leg away. ' ' '
